Dr. Stat's Buy Low/Sell High: Week 3
As Week 2 of the NFL season ends, it's time to assess the value of certain players on your roster. Whose value is low enough right now that you get them for less than they are worth? Whose value might be at its highest point of the season? I'll feature some players that fall under both categories here.
BUY LOW
Braylon Edwards Cleveland BrownsYes, that's right. 2 weeks in a row on the buy low section is a somewhat scary sign. However, he has faced two very good defenses, and last week faced a Steelers defense that gave Anderson about 2 seconds to throw every time. He does also have several drops, but remember it was a windy game. Now may very well be the time to steal Edwards from a panicking owner in your league, as he faces an easier defense next week, and has several favorable matchups throughout the year.
Joseph Addai Indianapolis ColtsAfter a Week 2 20 yard performance, some fantasy owners are probably sitting there scratching their heads. Yes, he sits at 64 yards in 2 games. Not really the stats you were expecting from a top pick in the FF draft. But if you look at the 2 teams he has played, neither has allowed a 100 yard runner, in either of their first two games. Minnesota was a notoriously tough run defense last year, and they looked as sharp as ever. I fully expect Addai to come out of this slump. The Colts have a tough schedule, but they know the run game must be prominent if they are going to win those games. Now, you're not going to be able to get him for free, but if you find the right team owner, you will most likely be able to work out a deal.
Jeremy Shockey New Orleans SaintsShockey was somewhat quiet in the Saints week 2 game against the Redskins. Much of that can be attributed to Brees getting pressured all game long. Shockey still hasn't had that breakout game after coming back from injury but it will happen soon enough. Don't trade the house for him, but don't be surprised to see a big game from him in the coming weeks as the next 4 teams the Saints face are susceptible to good Tight End play.
SELL HIGH
Chris Chambers San Diego Chargers
For years Chambers has been notorious for having a horrible WR completion%. I mean awful. And when I say awful, i mean, the worst of any WR in the league for several years running. He did have a big week in week 2, but I wouldn't expect anywhere near that week in and week out. Yes, the Broncos have some excellent corners, but you can't expect them to do everything in a game like that. Also, with LT out and such a high scoring game, it forced the Chargers to heave the ball like crazy. In week 1 Chambers was targeted once the entire game. It was for a touchdown, but you don't want to have a WR starting on your team that will have one catch, regardless of whether it was for a TD or not.
Both of these Quarterbacks had nice weeks, especially Warner. Throwing for 3 TDs and a perfect rating is the perfect way to keep Leinart on the bench. Also, JTO throwing for 321 and a TD puts an emphasis on how much a change at QB for the 49ers needed to happen. If you have either of these guys on your bench, there will not be a better time all season to get rid of them. After Cassell's ho-hum start last week, and at least 1 team in every league scrambling for a QB, Warner and O'Sullivan are the epitome of trade bait this week. Excellent weeks from both, but let's face facts here. 1, they both played defenses that have given up big points the past two weeks. 2, Warner is getting up there in age, and had trouble finishing out last season when he didn't even start the first 5 games of the season. 3. O'Sullivan was pressured all game long. After being sacked 8 times, and being hurried almost every snap, it really shows the weakness of this o-line.
One player to keep an eye on is Earnest Graham. His stats look great, but if it wasn't for a 68 yard TD run towards the end of the game yesterday, Graham would have had a below average showing. He has lost his starting RG to a broken foot, who will be out for at least 6 more weeks. Graham on many runs has shown the effect of this. I can't label him a definite sell right now, because I think he still has a good year. However, if week 3's game goes for him just as week 2's did, I would consider trading him.
I'M NOT GIVING UP ON
Carson Palmer, Chad Johnson, T.J. Houshmandzadeh
These 3 were on a short leash after last week, and didn't improve much in week 2. However, this team has too much talent and firepower to keep this up week in and week out. Starting them next week hurts, but I can't let them go just yet. Housh is in a contract year, and CJ has been playing hurt. I'm going to ride out this wave a bit longer, as this is not the first season the Bengals have started out slow.
CLOSING THOUGHTS
Panthers WR Steve Smith has rejoined his team after his 2 weeks suspension. If you were the guy in your draft that took Smith, and have had a top receiver on the bench for 2 weeks, this has to be a nice sight. The Panthers have looked sharp, and Delhomme is looking good since his Tommy John surgery. The team is riding high after 2 comeback wins, against two good teams. Start Smith with confidence this week.
Calvin Johnson, WR of the Lions, is the real deal this year. He came into the league as basically the perfect WR specimen, and now that he is not forced to play through a painful back injury, he has delivered. If you own Johnson, you are most likely being offered trades left and right for him. There is a reason for that, and that reason is he is going to keep this up all year long. Do not let him go for cheap, as he is no Sell High candidate right now. He is currently 2nd in receiving yards, with an 18.3 yards per catch average. He is right in between Greg Jennings and Anquan Boldin for most receiving yards through week 2, and don't see any of these three falling out of the top 10 by years end.
