Introduction
"Why don't you try checking the rules, Frank...Shankopotamus"---Investor Baby from the last great E-Trade commercial
I have to give it up to Drew Brees and the Saints.  What a terrific performance to win last night's Super Bowl.  They not only found a way to keep Peyton on the sideline, but they also had the normally aggressive Colts defense playing from their heels for most of the night.  A lot has been and will be made of Coach Payton's decision to go for the onside kick to start the 2nd half, and it was one of the gutsiest calls in Super Bowl history.  He could have been questioned for all eternity had it not been successful.  Peyton would have had the ball and the lead to start the 2nd half in Saints territory, and it could have been all over for the Saints.

It worked out for him, but I would submit to all that this wasn't the turning point in the game.  That happened in the 2nd quarter as far as I'm concerned.  You might recall, if you hadn't already had too many beers by then,  that right after the Saints got on the board with their first FG in the 2nd quarter, the Colts were back on offense and hadn't been stopped by the Saint D at all to that point.  On the 3rd down play of that series, Peyton put one right on the hands of Pierre Garcon for what looked to be a big gainer, but Garcon forgot to catch the ball, and the Colts were 3-and-out.  That set up the chain of events that led to the Saints getting another FG to end the first half, but more importantly, that one play left the Saints in the game.  The rest, as they say, is history.

Admittedly, I thought the Saints had no chance last night and said as much yesterday.  This one would have to rank right up there with the Jets win over the Colts way back when, the Patriots win in 2002 over the mighty Rams, or the G-Men taking down the undefeated Pats a couple of years ago.  Fortunately for me, this big upset didn't hurt me at all having bagged both NBA plays leading up to the yesterday's Main Event.  This is a good thing because I can be happy for the Saints success even though it cost me a perfect 3-0 day.  I still made out, and that's all that matters.

Like many of the rest of us out there today, the NBA is having a "hangover day" with only 3 games on the schedule.  How about we see if we can expand on our good start to the week?

THE NBA

SU WINNERS  (1-1 yesterday)
MAGIC, Mavs and LAKERS

TOTALS  (2-0 yesterday)
I'm showing all 3 games tonight as OVERS - Hornets/MAGIC (193 1/2), Mavs/WARRIORS (218 1/2) and Spurs/LAKERS (193 1/2)

BUTTA  (2-0 yesterday)
1.  LAKERS (-4) over Spurs - This is the most conditional of plays and will not be made if Kobe doesn't go again tonight for the Lakers.  L.A. is about as deep as they come in The Association, though I'm still scratching my head over how Sasha Vucajic remains on any NBA roster,  but Andrew Bynum has been downgraded to "doubtful" tonight with a knee.  So, if Kobe isn't playing as well, there's no way I'm laying points with The Champs.  The Spurs are a shell of what they once were, but take Bynum and Kobe out of the Laker mix, and San Antonio could have a real shot at stealing this one.

ALL THE REST  (2-0 yesterday)

BUTTA, NO BREAD
1.  Hornets (+9) at MAGIC - This is not the kind of situation the Magic have had much success in so far this season.  Being a big favorite off a big win makes this look like a trap game.  Orlando should win this game, but I have serious doubts about their ability to cover this huge spread, even against a shorthanded Stinger squad.

YUCK!!!
1.  Mavs (-4) over WARRIORS - Do you trust the Mavs right about now?  I sure don't.  The Warriors are one of the league's worst teams, but they always give the Mavs trouble; especially out there in Oakland.  It's a short number though considering the talent imbalance, so I can't make a case for a Warrior team that's become accustomed to being roundly booed at home.  It's almost like every game is a road game for them now.

FINAL SUPER BOWL THOUGHTS
One of the big things about the Big Game every year is the advertisements.  What do you think?  Admittedly, I didn't catch any of the ads that ran during halftime.  I just had no interest in The Who at all, but even that was quite the marketing gimmick for CBS, don't you think?  Here the network gets to roll out these old fossils that provide the theme music for CBS's CSI franchise.  That wasn't too obvious when it comes to cheap self-promotion, was it?

As far as the ads that ran during the game, I thought they were so very weak.  It was like Madison Avenue just threw in the towel this year.  Of course, the best of the night were from Anhueser-Busch with the "Human Bridge" for Budweiser and the "Lost" parody for Bud Light.  I kinda liked the screaming chickens for Denny's, but even they got a little irritating after the 2nd time running that premise.  And just a note to E-Trade:  Enough with the investor baby already.  You guys haven't struck gold with that premise since since you put the kid in the country club locker room with Frank the Shankopotumus.

As you can probably tell, I was not impressed in the least.  What does impress me though is the fact that even after an event as big as the Super Bowl is now just a memory, there's still a ton of neat, available stuff to do here in "The Happiest Place on Earth".   Have a great Monday everybody.  Remember to drink plenty of water today.  I'm sure, if you're like me, dehydration may be a bit of an issue.   Take it easy, go slow, get back home in one piece and I'll see you all again tomorrow.
