FORMER SOUTH CAROLINA KICKER RYAN SUCCOP WILL ENJOY WEEKLONG CELEBRATION OF TITLE "MR. IRRELEVANT"
Ryan Succop, former kicker out of South Carolina, was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs as the last player drafted in Sunday’s NFL draft, earning himself the redundant title of “Mr. Irrelevant”.
The “Mr. Irrelevant” title has been given out to the last player selected in the NFL draft, and has been celebrated ever since 1976, when former last pick Kelvin Kirk was unexpectedly invited to a week of celebrating and partying immediately after the Pittsburgh Steelers selected him with the 487th pick.
These days, Mr. Irrelevant is given a huge weeklong celebration in southern California, which now is officially called, you guessed it, “Mr. Irrelevant week”.
Mr. Irrelevant week, which is held the week of June 23, consists of three events to celebrate Mr. Irrelevant’s, in this case Ryan Succop’s, departure to play in the NFL.
The first event is an arrival party/press conference and a "Shower of Gifts". You can join in conversation with many sports celebrities and other members of the media. The whole “Shower of Gifts” is a generous overdose of free gifts given to Mr. Irrelevant.
The main event of the week is the All-Star Lowsman Trophy Banquet. This is where Mr. Irrelevant enjoys great local food and is given advice from football celebrities such as Bill Walsh. Ultimately, it’s a gathering of NFL players and celebrities to rejoice the NFL’s “last man”.
The Surf City experience and closing ceremonies top off the week for Mr. Irrelevant, with most locals attempting to make his last night the best.
The whole “Mr. Irrelevant” title is starting to sound pretty good right about now, and is obviously not something to tease about. Besides, with a last name like Succop, I’m sure he’s used to it. Yet, Succop didn’t know what it all meant when he told his friends that he would be the last pick of the draft.
Succop knew that he would either be drafted on day two, or not be drafted at all. So, on Saturday night, Succop looked over every pick in round 3-7, and compared them with the teams he had worked out for, hoping to foresee where he would go. When he was finally done, Succop said that only one spot made sense, and it just so happened to be the final pick of the draft.
Kansas City held the final spot of the draft, and coincidentally, the Chiefs were the team that Succop thought he had the best shot to play for. Recent declines in kicking and punting gave Succop the idea of being drafted to Kansas City, and caused the Chiefs to eventually draft him. With his only competition being rising second year kicker Connor Barth, Succop may not have to live up to his last name in order to be a starter.
