Introduction
San Diego Chargers General Manager AJ Smith has made several mistakes over the years which has kept the Chargers from making a Super Bowl run over the years. I'm going to name those mistakes in this article. The only good thing Smith did was center Nick Hardwig in 2004 and outside linebacker Shawn Meriman in 2005.
AJ Smith
No this is not a coors light commercial lol. This is an article on why AJ Smith should be fired.
In his first year the Chargers had the first pick in the NFL Draft.  The Chargers were projected to select Eli Manning the little brother of Peyton Manning, but Eli didn't want to play for San Diego so they drafted Eli and traded him to the New York Giants for Phillip Rivers.  The Chargers got rid of superstar quarterback Drew Brees two years later after he had a season ending injury in week 17 of the 2005-2006 season.  Brees evolved into a superstar once the Chargers drafted Rivers.  The Chargers should have drafted Larry Fitzgerald who was a phenominal wide receiver in college.  Imagine the San Diego Chargers with Drew Brees, Ladanian Tomlinson, Larry Fitzgerald, and Antonio Gates.  That is one explosive offense that could have led the Chargers to a super bowl apperance or a Super Bowl win.  The bottom line is AJ Smith didn't have faith in Drew Brees and he watched Brees win this years Super Bowl with the Saints.  I'm not taking anything away from Rivers he's good too, but Brees was better if you ask me.

The second mistake AJ Smith made was firing Marty Schotenheimer, as offensive cordinator Cam Cameron, and defensive cordinator Wade Phillips both took Head coaching jobs.  Meaning San Diego would have a new head coach, offensive cordinator, and defensive cordinator.  AJ Smith hired Norv Turner who has a history of losing the big game in the playoffs.  In all honesty I'd rather have Marty coach a playoff game than Norv Turner.  Because Marty will never stop motivating his players.  Norv gets lax and cocky knowing his teams potential thinking he can rest his guys the first month because the AFC West the division the Chargers compete in is a weak division.

The third mistake he made was trading a bunch of draft picks to get strong safety Eric Weddle.  AJ Smith is on the verge of making another key mistake.  There is a good chance he is gonna release Ladanian Tomlinson the teams star runningback.

My concluding argument is even though AJ Smith has drafted well.  He has made some controversial decisions that have kept this franchise from competing for a Super Bowl.  This is why I believe AJ Smith deserves to be fired.

Offlinesdchargers1982 says .. on 8/2/10 1 - When AJ drafted Rivers in 2004, D. Brees had Passer Rating of 76.9 in 2002 and in 2003 67.5. How could AJ trust in D. Brees? IMO AJ did the right choice in drafting a Rivers.

2 - Marty Schottenheimer is one of the worst HC in the Playoffs. 18 games and 5 wins. And N. Turner proved that he is better in the Playoffs than Schottenheimer.

3 - I agree and disagree with you. I think that it was good picks for Eric Weddle, but Eric Weddle is doing a very good job. Just the time will answer if it was a mistake or it was a good trade.

Conclusion that AJ changed the Chargers. The Chargers was a joke for 6-8 years after the 1994 Season and now it is almost right that every year we gonna be in the Playoffs.
