Introduction
My thought on what the 49ers should do this offseason. This will include re-signing, roster cuts, free agency, and the draft
Brian Orakpo
Bryant McFadden
Rashad Johnson
Vernon Carey

Let me just start by saying that the 49ers are NOT trying to make a huge splash in the free agency period.  This means no Julius Peppers, Albert Haynesworth, or Nnamdi Asomugha.  Now I'll begin.

Players to Re-sign:

Takeo Spikes, Allen Rossum, Aubrayo Franklin, Tony Wragge, Billy Bajema, Marcus Hudson

Players to Release/Cut:

Mark Roman, Zak Keasy, Damane Duckett, Ron Fields, Bryant Johnson, JT O'Sullivan, Donald Strickland

Free Agency:

Bryant McFadden, CB:  The 49ers really need 1 more corner to be able to defend the pass better.  Nate Clements is a good corner.  Tarell Brown is a great young player who has a fantastic future ahead of him.  Reggie Smith is a decent cornerback.  Walt Harris is aging and will be on the final year of his contract.  With the addition of McFadden, the secondary is greatly improved.

Vernon Carey, RT:  The 49ers have a young, but improvin offensive line.  Now you may think that they should just draft one, but that wouldn't be the correct route to go.  We have other needs to fill in the draft, so taking an RT in the first 2 rounds wouldn't make any sense.  Vernon Carey is still a reliable player who would come relatively cheap.

2009 NFL Draft:

1st round:  Brian Orakpo, DE/OLB Texas - This is a need that will be adjusted in the first round.  Brian Orakpo is the preferred pick, because he is most likely to succeed in the 3-4 better than the 49ers' second choice at this pick, Everette Brown.  The team most likely to take Orakpo before the 49ers is the Green Bay Packers, at #9.  Mark Sanchez will NOT be drafted by the 49ers!  The former Longhorn has great upside.  He brings alot of quickness and acceleration to the table.  Outstanding run-stuffer, who is very versitile.  The only thing he needs to work on is his pash rush moves.  If Brian Orakpo is available at pick #10, then 49ers will take him.  'Nuff said.

2nd round:  Rashad Johnson, FS Alabama - The #1 weak spot for the 49ers during this past season was FS, because Mark Roman couldn't create turnovers.  He should get cut, but even if he doesn't, the 49ers need to take Rashad Johnson here in the 2nd round.  He has fantastic hands and ball skills, which Roman lacks.  He offers versatility and can read and react very quickly.  Rashad Johnson can be a leader.

3rd round:  Rhett Bomar, QB Sam Houston State - You guys might remember him, the one who got dismissed from Oklahoma.  Well he transferred to Sam Houston State and is one of my top sleepers in this year's draft class.  Some are concerned about his attitude, but he didn't have any off-the-field incidents since being dismissed, so I think he is a good pick here.  He has a strong arm, and has great mechanics.  He is athletic and mobile, and can throw the ball on the run well.  He is good under pressure, but sometimes has too much confidence which has lead to interceptions.  He can be a leader.  This pick will be meant to groom a QB then eventually have him take over the starting job.

4th round:  Ramses Barden, WR Cal Poly - Barden is my #1 sleeper for this year.  He brings depth to the WR position, and I could see him being the slot reciever in a few years, behind Josh Morgan and Jason Hill.  Barden is tall, at 6'6 and very athletic.  Very physical player who can run block.  He would have to improve his route running, but I think he should be able to do that.

5th round:  Rashad Jennings, RB Liberty - Deshaun Foster has 1 more year on his contract and will probably retire after that.  The NFL is transforming into a 2-back league.  The 49ers have a star in Frank Gore, this guy will be their #2 back, who will see some carries, and will provide a valuable player if Gore gets injured.  He is very athletic.  Patient, strong runner who is hard to bring down.  He is great in goalline and short-yardage situations, which will be very helpful.

6th round:  Tyronne Green, OG Auburn- At this point in the draft, the 49ers are looking for depth.  They need a backup guard and Green could do it.  He is a strong, quick player who is light on his feet.  he is very athletic.

7th round:  Ra'Shon Harris, DT Oregon - This may be a homer pick right here.  I've seen Harris play and I think he can transfer to a 3-4 NT.  He won't need to make an impact right away, but he has the potential.  He has good size for a 3-4 NT.

OfflineTriple S says .. on 19/1/09 lemme be straight with you:
good article and very well thought out and planned BUT i strongly disagree with your draft picks, we have so many studs on defense so why the hell would you want to draft orakpo:
1) he will be taken in the top 5 so he wont be available
2) we have justin smith, balmer, sopoaga is extremely underrated and LBs like willis, lawson, banta-cain, and spikes another LB is not necessary what is necessary is an OT, we've let up 55 sacks, worst in the league and you want to draft an OT in the 6TH ROUND!!! sorry that will not cut it, we need one in the 1st round, i'll post a thread about it
OfflineLakers = Coolest Thing Since Sliced Bread says .. on 19/1/09 Vernon Carey isn't nearly as much of a risk....We sign him, then we don't need an OT. I haven't seen a mock with him going in the top 5. If we had so many studs on defense, we would have been top 10. Banta-Cain sucks. Balmer will develop into the other DE while Orakpo can play OLB.
OfflineTriple S says .. on 19/1/09 damn my comment didnt post lemme try again:
1st round - jason smith OT, baylor, a league-high 55 sacks are just unacceptable
2nd round - they need to make a decision here, FS or WR (they should pickup plaxico burress), if FS you're right with rashad johnson but if not derrius heyward-bey, maryland or hakeem nicks, UNC
3rd round - WR here if they pick a FS in the 2nd which they probably will, there are tons of WRs in the 3rd round, good enough to make up for last year's huge mistake (missing desean jackson, limas sweed, malcom kelly, & devin thomas) - brandon lafell, derrick williams, jauquin iglesias, mohammed massaquoi, & louis murphy are all good picks
OfflineTriple S says .. on 20/1/09 you are truly bent upon vernon carey arent you, fine sobeit, if we draft vernon carey than why not taylor mays 1st pick, a good WR like derrius heyward-bey or hakeem nicks in the 2nd round and alex boone (OT ohio state) in the 3rd round, how's that?
OfflineLakers = Coolest Thing Since Sliced Bread says .. on 20/1/09 I like both of the WR's, not familiar with boone. I don't think Mays declared.....He is the same player as Mark Roman though. All Mays does is hit.....He can't force turnovers, 1 in the past 2 years to be exact.
OfflineTriple S says .. on 20/1/09 yeah, but i dont know of too many other good safetys in the draft...alex boone is a 5th-year senior from ohio state (my favorite college team), considering the years beanie wells has had and considering boone blocked for him both those years - he's good
OfflineLakers = Coolest Thing Since Sliced Bread says .. on 20/1/09 I'll check Boone out tomorrow....Now, I need to study for finals. Spanish and Science tomorrow.
OfflineTriple S says .. on 20/1/09 history and biology for me good luck bro
Onlinebababooey says .. on 19/1/09 I was thinking we need to draft Nate Davis QB from Ball St. I can see Sean Hill starting next year, but in 2010 we need a stud QB and I think Davis is that guy.
OfflineLakers = Coolest Thing Since Sliced Bread says .. on 19/1/09 You're a Niners fan?
OfflineLakers = Coolest Thing Since Sliced Bread says .. on 19/1/09 I'm ok with Nate Davis....Here is a scenerio were I could see us taking him......We take Ron Brace in the 3rd, then we'd take Davis in the 4th or 5th. I think Bomar has more upside personally. Thanks for commenting!
Onlinebababooey says .. on 19/1/09 I'm not familiar with Brace, but I'm going to look him up now. I am not sure Davis will last that long in the draft, but I hope he does. I know a lot of people have Mark Sanchez rated higher (he's not that good) so maybe we can get lucky. Good article though.
OfflineLakers = Coolest Thing Since Sliced Bread says .. on 19/1/09 Sanchez should have stayed, it would benefit him so much more.
Onlinebababooey says .. on 19/1/09 I think he took a look at Leinert and how he lost draft position, weighed the possibility of getting injured in college next year and made a good decision to leave school. He needs to get paid, but he also needs to improve in a lot of areas.
OfflineLakers = Coolest Thing Since Sliced Bread says .. on 19/1/09 Yeah, I'm sure that is why.
Offlinegogators503 says .. on 19/1/09 Very nice article! I don't really know enough about the 49ers to comment, but I do think they can do better than Bomar in the 3rd round for QB. Either way, great job!
OfflineLakers = Coolest Thing Since Sliced Bread says .. on 19/1/09 Thanks, I think they'll take a QB no matter what, but they want a pass rusher in the 1st according to articles I've read.
Offlinegogators503 says .. on 19/1/09 I just think that someone like Nate Davis may still be there, and he'd be a better bet than Bomar.
OfflineLakers = Coolest Thing Since Sliced Bread says .. on 19/1/09 I like Davis too, just an instict to me that Bomar has better upside.
Offlinegogators503 says .. on 19/1/09 I just don't trust Bomar, personally. Davis has as much talent and a better personality.
OfflineLakers = Coolest Thing Since Sliced Bread says .. on 19/1/09 Yeah, I guess....I just think getting dismissed was a wake-up call to him.
OfflineLakers = Coolest Thing Since Sliced Bread says .. on 19/1/09 I have a question for you.....Do you think Michael Johnson is overrated? I personally think he is but others are high on him.
Offlinegogators503 says .. on 19/1/09 Which Michael Johnson are we talking about?
OfflineLakers = Coolest Thing Since Sliced Bread says .. on 19/1/09 DE out of GT....LOL that is a pretty common name.
Offlinegogators503 says .. on 19/1/09 Haha that's what I thought, just wanted to make sure before I go off sounding like an idiot. The 9 sacks and 27 solo tackles are impressive, definitely, but when compared to some of the elite OT in the draft (Oher, Smith) I don't feel like he could really compete with them, personally. Johnson is a talented player, who could have a long future in the NFL, but I don't rank him near as high as I do some of the OLs.
OfflineLakers = Coolest Thing Since Sliced Bread says .. on 19/1/09 Yeah, you're right....Somehow that does't surprise me. I haven't looked at any mocks recently, but back in December some had Johnson going to the Niners, and I just thought that is too early for him to be drafted
Offlinetigertennis7 says .. on 19/1/09 That was a really good article. I don't know a lot about the 9ers, but I really enjoyed reading, great job.
OfflineLakers = Coolest Thing Since Sliced Bread says .. on 19/1/09 Thanks, normally don't get that about my work.
