Remember The Titans?
Back from the dead?
Later, as the Tennessee Titans, there was one uplifting, albeit temporary high point - the "music city miracle" against those same Bills, in the 1999 season, actually played 1-8-2000 - but it was short lived. They died a fateful few inches short of tying the Rams in Super Bowl..XXXIV, as time expired.
And while (similar to the Bills) the fates have kept them on the outside, looking in, there is/was no reason to give up on themselves, even with last year's disappointing early exit in the playoffs.
Now let's look at Vince Young, a young man in desperate need of a mentor if there ever was one.
Vince was a gifted QB, all the way back to high school in Houston where he grew up. And as many a gifted athlete finds out later on, there are "ways" that others can find to bring you down.
The joke about Vince was that he thought the "Wonderlic Test" was a cheerleader initiation of sorts. Wrong.
It was and is a test used to determine aptitiude in problem solvimg situations, and is used to assess players before NFL teams decide to draft them.
Where this test fails miserably is that it doesn't detect instinct in an athlete, especially one who is nervous about written tests (perhaps explaining why Vince's score was so low that only Memphis should have taken him, in college). But you need only to look at the way he (and Michael Vick too) dart to and fro, avoiding tackle after tackle as they turn losses into big gains on the field to know that these men have instinct!
(Wonderlic this!)
Then this man befriended Steve McNair only to have to suffer his loss like a family member might.
And there was the booing incident and the sprained MCL in September 2008 that led to Young's disappearance (allegedly with a gun).
For a young man of limited experience, after all those years of praise, and then to hear booing and being benched (for what he thought was being injured), this had to weigh heavily on the young player.
Hopefully, that is behind him now that McNair's kids need a father figure, or at least, a big brother one.
This year, after the team fell into the same depths (of a kind) that entrapped Vince, they let him out of hell and said, "Here, show us what you've got!"
And what a show it has been!
Leave it to those bozos at the networks to play up the team's resurrection into some .. Super Bowl winning second music city miracle - but the cold, hard facts of life are these: They have yet to defeat (during their comeback trail) any real contenders. The networks just want to pump up their ratings.
But they will get their chance this week and next ... when they play the Cardinals and Colts, both teams of which are 5-0 where the Titans have to play them! (road and home)
If they lose both and then run the table, 8-8 is not likely to be rewarded (9-7 has a chance).
But more imprtantly, this can (I hope) jumpstart Vince Young's career because he was an absolute pleasure to watch on TV, last Monday night, with that "all out, college enthusiasm" and instinctive darting.
Ahhhh, to be "Young" again ...

root/nom/10 I was one of those that thought VY was washed up. Maybe he NEEDED that time on the bench to learn the reall inner workings of an offense.

As a football fan, you probably know that my reference to "the precipice of oblivion" was the allegedly contemplated suicide of Vince which connotes instability, Then to have this McNair thing happen ...That's why I pray for him to excel again - to bolster his psyche - and for the sake of his new found relationship with the McNair children. They all need each other currently.

First major task completed. In what seemed like a Rose Bowl replay, Vince Young took his team on a final scoring drive of 99 yards as time expired to beat Matt Leinart's team. And Arizona had been 5-0 on the road until now. With Indy next week, and the Titans needing to run the table now, it's time for a second miracle, except this one won't be in "music city". The game is in Indy where INDY is 5-0.
I'm rooting for Vince to slay "Goliath"... and then it doesn't end there!
