This was posted on fangraphs this morning. It is showing what pitchers had the largest losses and gains in the fastball mph from 2008 to 2009. Minimum of 50 innings pitched each year to qualify.

Joba Chamberlain, -2.5
Ervin Santana, -2.1
Ross Ohlendorf, -2
Jared Burton, -1.7
Tim Lincecum, -1.7
Daniel Cabrera, -1.7
Manny Delcarmen, -1.6
Chan Ho Park, -1.6
Brian Fuentes, -1.6
Jeremy Sowers, -1.5
Lance Cormier, -1.4
Chris Young, -1.4
Grant Balfour, -1.3
Mariano Rivera, -1.3
Tim Redding, -1.3
Oliver Perez, -1.2
Aaron Cook, -1.2
Kevin Gregg, -1.2
Kyle McClellan, -1.1
Aaron Heilman, -1

Gains

Justin Masterson, 2.8
Nick Masset, 2.6
Matt Capps, 2.1
Ryan Madson, 2.1
Kevin Correia, 2
Justin Verlander, 2
Mark Lowe, 2
Huston Street, 1.7
Barry Zito, 1.6
Brad Penny, 1.6
Josh Johnson, 1.6
Jose Contreras, 1.5
Jon Lester, 1.5
Jonathan Broxton, 1.4
Wandy Rodriguez, 1.3
Luke Hochevar, 1.3
Miguel Batista, 1.3
Chris Volstad, 1.2
Bob Howry, 1.2
Ubaldo Jimenez, 1.2

The list of fastball gains make sense to me. The one player on the top list that doesn't make a lot of sense to me is Lincecum. Lincecum's velocity was down last year, and it was fairly well known, but unlike many of the other pitchers on that list, his production did not dip. Anything else stand out to you on these lists?

I would assume that would be the case here. He is throwing way more pitches as a starter than he was as a reliever. If he wanted to go deeper into games, he couldn't go all out with every pitch like he probably did as a one inning guy.

Apparently.... maybe is was an injury in 2008 that made his 2009 FB velocity look better....

As far as Lincecum dipping from 99 to 97 isnt a huge change. But I really wouldnt be surprised if he ends up burning out rather quickly with his small stature. Im still wondering how long it will take Yankees fans to realize Joba as a stater is a mistake. But I agree there arent many surprises on here and I saw that too and was about to make a thread but I was Ging and you beat me to it

Yeah...screw this shit. Chicago has gotten about a foot of snow over the past two days, and somehow there was a magnitude 4.5 earthquake about 45 miles from Chicago this morning.

Wednesday's are typically awesome for me because my boss is never around, and i can work from home in the afternoon, G, then go out to a bar for trivia night around 8, but now that is all screwed up because my boss is around and there is a shit ton of snow.

We have like 40 inches of snow on the ground right now and its still snowing. I have an SUV and for the first time ever on sat there was to much snow to drive in. My bumper was actually having to push through the snow

So Jeremy Sowers lost like 20% of the velocity on his fastball.

Verlander:
06- 3.63 ERA (95 MPH)
07- 3.66 ERA (95 MPH)
08- 4.84 ERA (93.5 MPH)
09- 3.45 ERA (95.5 MPH)

Hmm...

eeeh... not that much to me. I drop off in velocity has to be expected at his age. Velocity is not what makes him succeed though, it is locating the ball correctly and cutting it in and out of the strike zone.

True, I expect another great season from him though

Good chance at being the best closer by the end of the year. We'll see how K-Rod does.

Not really all that much competition there. Mo/Paps/Soria/Nathan...Don't see much competition besides that.

Lincehippy has a great change up so his fastball, which is right around 94-96 still looks like it's 98.

Yeah, when you have a deceiving change up, you don't need that much velocity on your fastball.

He makes hitters look foolish on a regular basis with his change up and he has a nasty breaking ball too. The kid is gonna look great in Yankee pinstripes 3 years from now.

Probably the truth...If he makes 15 million in his 3rd arb eligible year, the probably will make something like 17 or 18 in his final one, then demand someone that is complete insanity after that.

Wouldn't you avoid arbitration this year with a player like that? He wants 13 they offered 8. Just give the guy 10.5 call it a day and work on signing him to a long term deal. That's just my opinion, what do you think?

When it goes to an arbitrator, he chooses either figure, not an in between figure, so it would either be 13 or 8. Even though his accomplishments are Godly thus far, i have a feeling that the arbitrator would rule 8 considering it is his first arb eligible year. San Fran would be smart to try to lock him up before his value continues to soar.

I guess soon after I posted that they offered him a 3 year contract. In my opnion, a team should try and lock up their ace so they can let the player go out and pitch. The guy is the face of the franchise and they need to pay his ass.

Have a great weekend.

Thanks...you too. They agreed to a 2 year 23 million dollar deal. Next time around could be a Felix like deal only bigger...
