Seeing the greatest right handed hitter of all time?

The candidates as I see them.

Hank Aaron
Jimmie Foxx
Alex Rodriguez
Manny Ramirez
Joe Dimaggio
Rogers Hornsby
Willie Mays
Albert Pujols

I am not wondering if you think Pujols is better overall player. Strictly from an offensive stand point, is Pujols the best right handed hitter ever, will he be when he's done?

Also if I made any glaring omissions from my list, let me know,

Could we count Josh Gibson on this list??

Hank Greenberg?

I think he will be looked at in 10 years as the best RH ever.

I don't typically include Josh Gibson, not because I think lowly of him, but because I have no quantifiable way to account for his hitting. Some suggest that he was the greatest hitter ever, so if you include him, I would not be one to criticize.

I agree. It is tough to rank him. I just did a quick search and his name came up, so I wanted to know what you thought.

What about Honus Wagner?

He didn't hit for power, obviously, but he hit for average and is the best hitting SS ever (Hanley Ramirez will probably pass him).

In his time he was as good as any hitter and/or player in baseball. He is a glaring omission on my part. He certainly deserves to be on that list.

Do you think that Hanley Ramirez could eventually become the best SS ever?

I would say that he could definitely be the best hitting SS ever if he isn't already but I think he needs to make tremendous strides on the defensive side. We have been blessed to see possibly the greatest 1B, SS, closer, and many top pitchers during this era. I also firmly believe that Chase Utley could become one of the best 2B to ever play the game.

I don't think there is any doubt that Hanley is on a career tract to at least be included in that discussion. Utley is as well, but he will never garner that recognition from people outside the "stats community" it seems, as he is consistently over shadowed by that homer and strikeout happy 1B he plays next too.

Between RJ, Maddux, Clemens, Pedro we were certainly treated to one of the great sets of pitchers I think any generation has seen. Hell with Timmy, Felix, Kershaw, and a few others on the periphary we might be in 10 years having this discussion about them. Its certainly been a good time to be a baseball fan.

Don't forget, pending on where you place Alex on the diamond (I would call him a 3B, since thats where hes going to end up playing the most games), we may be seeing the best SS, 1B, 3B of all time.

Its not only a great time to be a baseball fan but its a great time to be a sports fan in general. In football we are witnessing guys like LT, Peyton Manning, Randy Moss, and Tom Brady. In basketball we are witnessing Chris Paul, Shaquille O'Neal, Kobe Bryant, Dirk, Kevin Garnett, and LeBron James. We have also seen some of the true greats in other sports such as Lance Armstrong and Michael Phelps.

I am curious to see what the MLB all-decade team looks like for this current decade. Must be stacked as hell.

Mike Schmidt and Frank Thomas should probably be thought about. But I am leaning towards taking Pujols over every other player listed.

Frank Robinson and Nap Lajoie should probably be at least mentioned.

He's probably near or at the top, but I think it has to mainly do with standard sports progression more than anything.

Like it went from Anson, to Lajoie, to Hornsby, to Dimaggio (maybe), to the Mays/Aaron debate and now to ARod/Pujols. I think it causes more of a headache than anything to try and say any of those guys are any better than the rest. They all just progressed with the rest of the game.

You missed Mario Mendoza (after whom "the Mendoza line" is named). -- lol

And yes, barring injury, Pujols will finish with the batting average of a Musial, the homers of a Mays, the RBI of only Pujols because he will pass Ruth and then Aaron!!
And if he retired right now, he has passed DiMaggio as the MLB's highest career RBI per season leader (Though Joltin Joe and Hank Greenberg have better RBI/AB ratios).

Uhh what about Frank Thomas and Jeff Bagwell? Maybe not the best, but def deserving of mention!

Oh and to answer the question, unfortunately yes. Bastard has to play for the Cards.

Also, what about the best switch hitters? Chipper Jones and Lance Berkman? I know the Mick is def #1 but they arent SO far behind!

There are a lot, its easy to forget. Pujols is an absolute monster.

But just how far does he climb on the all-time greatest list, overall, not just 1B, but ever? Top 10 i believe, but you think he could push top 5?

Yes.

In this day in age we are the luckiest sports fans.

We are easily seeing the best players to ever play their respective sports right now.

Can't you say that for just about every era when it currently takes place though?

You probably could.

However, I believe that this era with Pujols/Bonds/A-rod could easily have 3 top 5 players of all time (depending how much you love Bonds).

Then with the NFL you easily have the same with different players.

Don't know so much about the NBA, but its apparent that James is going to be around for a very very long time.

I just sometimes try to put myself in my dad's shoes during his time to gain a perspective. He graduated HS in '70.

Growing up, he saw:

Unitas and Brown, who were talents never seen before in football.
Mays, Aaron, Koufax...I mean you could go on there. All guys you could say were in the discussion for best ever.
Chamberlain, Robertson, West, Russell, those guys at the time couldn't be stopped.

I just look at it the same way I do technology. Two years ago everyone was going nuts about the first iPhone. Just two years later, no one would want to use that slow piece of junk.

Fortunately, the turnover for sports isn't nearly that short.
