Threads / Do you think the Panthers lost to Miami B/C of poor coaching?

This was the first Carolina Panthers game I've seen this year. It seemed to me that the Panthers, even with their offensive and defensive problems, lost because of bad play calling. Even though Miami's D is tough against the run, DWill was doing great (something like 9.2 ypc). You'd think they'd call his number at the goal line. Instead, they throw it three times in a row and settle with a field goal. They came out throwing, then abandoned the run in the second half, with their QB completing just barely over 40 percent of his throws. Their D got tired because the Panthers never controlled the clock, which led to Ricky's big gains in the fourth quarter (the D held Ricky pretty well until then).

What are your opinions from watching the game?

No, Ricky Williams was just an unstoppable beast.

While this statement is true, the Panthers actually kept Williams in check (like 3 ypc) early on. Sure, he scored the touchdowns, but he was Miami's only call at the goal line. Chad Henne actually moved the ball a ton. Since the Panthers were throwing the ball so much, they couldn't sustain many drives and the drives they did sustain were quick yardage gains. This didn't give the Carolina D enough time to rest. They were worn out, and Ricky began to gain huge chunks of yardage against them in the fourth. I still think (although it is pure speculation) if Carolina had run the ball more, they could have had a chance to win.

I went to the game and 2 things happened last night.

1) The Panthers got out played. Specifically Miami's Offense outplayed the Panthers Defense.

2) The Panthers play calling on offense was suspect. Like you said, not continuing to run when it works AND it is the strength of the offense.

What kind of changes do you think the head office should be making in the offseason?

I think John Fox is a terrific coach, but I also think it may be time for a change. Regardless of a coaching change they need to get a QB they can rely on. Delhomme is not bad, but lately he has lost a bit of his swagger, and his head hasn't been right since the Cardinals game last year. The fact they gave a 36 yr old QB such a contract extension along with the large paycheck they gave Peppers (a guy who doesn't want to be here) was crazy IMO.

I would not be surprised to see them move up in the draft or look for a quality free agent QB, by using Peppers, or Johnathan Stewart to make it happen.

I think a lot of it was Ricky Williams being the Ricky Williams of old. But there is one thing I dont get from the Panthers side where Delhomme has been struggling and they still like to throw the ball a lot. Also Stewart is still getting a lot of carries despite D Williams being far more effective with his touches

Jake Delhomme's inaccuracy issues will haunt the Panthers until they replace him. He is not the QB he once was. He overthrew Steve Smith more than once. Could have been points.
