Threads / NFL Suprises & Bust
With the NFL season far away, I thought I'd try to pass some time by getting a debat going about who will be this season's surprises & bust. Just got a few questions to get it going......
+ What team(s) with a record of 7-9 or worse from last season, will have a record of 8-8 or better?
- Teams included (with 08-09 record): Green Bay Packers (6-10); Detroit Lions (0-16); San Francisco 49ers (7-9); Seattle Seahawks (4-12); St. Louis Rams (2-14); Buffallo Bills (7-9); Cincinnati Bengals (4-11-1); Cleveland Browns (4-12); Jacksonville Jaguars (5-11); Oakland Raiders (5-11); Kansas City Chiefs (2-14)
+ What team(s) with a record of 8-8 or better from last season, will have a record of 7-9 or worse?
- Teams included (with 08-09 record): New York Giants (12-4); Philadelphia Eagles (9-6-1); Dallas Cowboys (9-7); Washington Redskins (8-8); Minnesota Vikings (10-6); Chicago Bears (9-7); Carolina Panthers (12-4); Atlanta Falcons (11-5); Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-7); New Orleans (8-8); Arizona Cardinals (9-7); Miami Dolphins (11-5); New England Patriots (11-5); New York Jets (9-7); Pittsburgh Steelers (12-4); Baltimore Ravens (11-5); Tennessee Titans (13-3); Indianapolis Colts (12-4); Houston Texans (8-8); San Diego Chargers (8-8); Denver Broncos (8-8)
+ From the teams listed in the 1st question, what team will finish with the best record? Worst record?
+ From the teams listed in the 2nd question, what team will finish with the best record? Worst record?
+ Which player will be the biggest surprise? Biggest disappointment?
+ Which team will be the biggest surprise? Biggest disappointment?
+ Which 1st round pick will be the biggest surprise? Biggest disppointment?
You don't have to answer them all, those are just some questions to get a discussion going. You can just pick one to answer, or you can answer them all if you wish. I'd appreciate a simple explanation but it's not required. Add opinions, comments, and even trash talk if you wish. (Sorry for the length of the first 2)

1. The Packers and Seahawks will most likely finish up above .500, but you can't discount the 49ers being in that weak NFC West. Don't sleep on the Browns either, they could push for .500 if a few guys can step up.
Best: Probably the Seahawks, 10-6.
Worst: Rams, 3-13
2. Denver will be lucky to win half as many games as they did last year, a #1 pick in their future is not out of the question. I also expect to see the Bucs regress a little bit given the fact they have a new head coach inheriting a terrible quarterback situation and an aging defense.
Best: Pats, 13-3
Worst: Broncos 2-14
3. Biggest surprise: Brady Quinn, ready to break onto the scene.
Biggest disappointment: Brett Farve-OVERRATED.
4. Biggest surprise: Bears emerge as real Super Bowl contenders.
Biggest disappointment: Pats won't win Super Bowl despite being best team on paper again.
5. Biggest surprise: Crabtree
Biggest disappointment: Stafford

Very good predictions, the only one I doubt is the Packers...The rest of that division got better, and the Packers were 4-10 against all the teams they played last year not based in Detroit! I think they go 5-11.
I like the Seahawks this season, personally I have them winning the West. The Packers will probably be over .500 this season b/c of all the injuries that happened last season. I also have to agree with you on the Rams.
Again, I agree with you. Denver won't win many games next season and will probably have a top 5 pick this year in the draft.
I do like your Brady Quinn pick as a breakout.
Overall I like most of your picks.

BTW a future #1 pick is out of the question they traded their 2010 1st round pick to my seahawks for our #36 overall pick in 2009. So i really hope the Bronco fall flat on their face. my hawks will have 2 top 15 picks next season.
Packers and Seahawks will finish above .500.
Denver, Tampa Bay, and the New York Jets could fall behind .500.
I think the Redskins are really gonna shock this season, especially with the NFC East being a large part of their competition.
Other surprise teams: Texans, Jaguars, Chiefs, Chargers could all finish with records much better than last years

*Drew Stafford not Drew Stanton....lmao
I think the Houston Texans have a chance to be 8-8 or better, but it's going to be tough because of their division.
I really think you are mistaken in the fact that the Houston Texans have matured alot over the past few seasons... but looking at your choices it looks like you are a Texas hater...
Um ok....I said Houston has a chance to go 8-8 in the comment right above yours. So since they matured, I am suppose to think their going to go like 10-6 or better?
They are not better than the Colts or Titans and the Jaguars are going to be a decent team this year. In that case, that is why I don't think the Texans will go 8-8 or better.

Colts are having alot of coaching turnover that i think could really effect them this year. HOuston has been Historically better when the play the Jags... and I think they will surprise alot of people... I didnt see the secondary comment to your first one i apologize. =)
Pretty nice picks overall. Why do you think Hayward Bay will be a surprise? Just b/c everyone is thinking the Raiders made a mistake by taking him over Crabtree.
Yea, I read that he has the talent to be as good as Crabtree, but didn't play in that good of an offense at Maryland. People are already labeling him a bust because he was drafted over Crabtree, but I think he may surprise some people.
1) Seahawks, Bills and Bengals will improve to above .500 and I could see the 49ers and Raiders flirting with it.
2) TB, Chicago, and Miami will fall below .500 this year. The titans, saints, and redskins will finish at .500
3) From question 1, the Seahawks will have the best record (10-6) and the Rams will finish with the worst record.(2-14)
4) The Steelers, Giants and maybe Colts will tie for the best record at 12-4. The Bucs will finish with the worst record at 4-12.
5) I think that Carson Palmer will be the surprise of the year. I know he is already a pro bowler and well known, but with the injuries hes had these past couple seasons, everyone seems to have forgotten about him and automatically write off the Bengals. I think that he could have a breakout year and remind everyone why he is a former pro-bowler. The Biggest disappointment this year will be Jay Cutler or Brett Favre. If Brett comes back (which I pray he doesn't) he will end up being the biggest disappointment with another about .500 season. Otherwise I think it'll be the other QB to join the NFC North. Cutler is going to a Bears team that doesnt have enough offensive threats to keep him happy and I think it will take him at least half the year to get used to it.
6) The team that will be the biggest surprise this yr is the Houston Texans. They are coming off of their second 8-8 season in franchise history and I really think they could improve this year. The only major loss they had was their backup QB, Rosenfels. I believe that if they stay healthy, they will end this season with their first ever 10 win season and compete for the AFC Chamionship this year. The team that will be the biggest disappointment will be the 3 NFC East teams that do not make the playoffs. I really feel that the NFC East is due for a bad year and that this will be it. The NFC South has three teams that could make the playoffs (Panthers, Saints, and Falcons) and the NFC West has two teams that could make the playoffs (Cardinals and Seahawks). I think this could lead to all three teams in the NFC East that don't win it not making the playoffs for the first time since 2004.

I really think Mark Sanchez is going to disappoint. Alot of hype has already been placed on his shoulders and I am just not sure this year is going to be all that great
1.Chiefs (I really think they've got something with cassel and bowe.Glenn dorsey's going to be a beast too), The bills (To's good enough for two extra wins even at this age.)
2.Cardinals(Sorry, They remind of the rays. They're one-year wonders.Plus no superbowl loser has made it to the playoff's this decade I belive)Buccaneers (They just destroyed that roster. The only player worth anything is winslow and the qb's are too terrible to get him the ball.)
3.Bills 10-6
4.Cardinals 4-12
5.Jay Cutler (Him and bennet were beast in college. Now there togther in chicago after running his mouth in denver, let's see if he can finally step up.)
6.Pierre Thomas (I just don't see it.He'll have to share carries with bush most likely and the saint's o-line isn't that great.)
7.Bills (End up in the playoffs as the wildcard.Get destroyed in the wildcard. But just being there after the year last year will be an improvement.)
8.Cowboys (Eagles got better,Redskins got better, Cowboys cut one of the greatest wr's of this decade.)
9.B.J raji (He was very very underated in college because he played at BC.He went to a great team in green bay, Probably make a key play in the play-off race)
10.Mark Sanchez (He played one year in college.I just don't see it happening with the jets either.)
Just to fill you in on a little something about the Saints' offensive line, they have only given up 52 sacks in the last 3 seasons.
I have to agree with you on the Ssanchez part, I just don't see him being as good as people think. I will also agree with you on the Chiefs part. I actually see them making a big turnaround from their 2-14 record.
The Rays are anything but a one-year wonder... they have been injured all season. Plus, they are tied for 3rd I believe in the AL East, a few games behind NY and 4 games back of Boston. They were 8-2 in their last 10 last time I checked. Please get your facts straight before calling a team a one-year wonder. At any rate, the Cardinals still have a top offense with Fitz and Boldin. The question is whether or not Warner can replicate last season.
The Bengals, and the 49ers. Cincy will have a healthly Carson Palmer plus added some solid free agents to bolster there D. Singletery had the 49ers playing good ball after he took over late last season!!
I look for Denver to struggle with all the changes new QB new HC.Dallas will be at the bottom of the toughest Division in the NFL with no T.O. and a lame -duck HC in Phillips The Cowboys will implode by
week 8.
Jason Cambell will put it all together after almost being traded. He will have a good if not great year.
Peyton Manning is going to have a sub par year for many reasons. New HC no Marvin Harrison, and
the AFC South will take it's toll on the All Pro.
As far as the rookies go I think that Brian Robisiki will have a great year sliding into the #2 wr for the Browns. Stafford will struggle for the fact he will be the starting QB on the worst team in the league.

First Question Green Bay hellafied defense Second question Giants if Plex comes back (That hurts). Third Desaune Jackson will be the surprise player even though he had a great year his Rookie season he will be in the top 5 in dominate recievers in the NFL, Disapointment Jay Cutler. Fourth Surprise 49ers, Disapointment Patriots, Tom Brady comes down to earth. Fifth question could be a hand full. Great thread.
1. Jacksonville and Seattle will both improve to at least 8-8. San Francisco will be good this year too.
2. This has to go to the Broncos, but Houston will not make a run at anything...this preseason hype for them is nonsense.
3. Seattle 10-6
St. Louis 3-13
4. New England 13-3
Denver 4-12
5. Matthew Stafford will take his first opportunity and run with it. Philip Rivers will struggle this upcoming season.
6. The Detroit Lions will win at least 6 games this year under a starting Stafford. The Houston Texans won't live up to the hype and finish last in their division.
7. Already made points on Stafford so, Aaron Curry will make the Pro Bowl.

I kinda don't see the Lions winning 6 game just yet..maybe 3 or 4. Still have a lot to improve on that team.
1. Packers (Best), Lions (Worst)
2. Patriots (Best), Jets (Worst)
3. Surprise: Devin Hester Disappointment: LT (if at this point you'd consider him that)
4. Surprise: Bears Disappointment: Pats
5. Surprise: Darrius Heyward-Bey Disappointment: Matt Stafford

I just think he's gonna be out to prove himself due to his draft status with being taken ahead of Crabtree and everything.. I also think Russel will be good this year which will lead to his success.
Here's mine by the way.
